China’s June Gold Imports Hit Two-Year High of 173 Tonnes on Lower Prices

7/25/2026 · Kitco News

China’s gold imports in June reached a fresh two-year high of 173 tonnes as falling global prices made the metal more attractive in the world’s largest bullion market. Purchases rose for a third straight month, topping May’s 163-tonne figure, with banks fully using quotas amid cheaper prices and a firmer yuan. Jinrui Futures analyst Zijie Wu said investors buying the dip and banks building inventories for retail sales and accumulation plans are key drivers. The new licensing regime starting June 1 also encouraged quota use. Imports through May totaled 692 tonnes, up 76% from 2025. May imports hit 163 tonnes while April reached 157 tonnes, rising 10% month-on-month, according to Ray Jia of the World Gold Council.
