Gold's Fresh Momentum Flags Warning on America's $40 Trillion Debt

8/30/2026 · Kitco News

Gold posted a weekend pullback, yet its roughly 10% monthly advance after a 30% correction underscores mounting worries over U.S. debt. Federal obligations have crossed $40 trillion, and Treasury purchases of long-term bonds are fueling fears of currency debasement as markets doubt Washington will cut deficits and instead tolerate inflation to erode real debt value.

Gold’s traditional inverse link to real yields is weakening because higher borrowing costs now reflect fiscal sustainability concerns. State Street’s Aakash Doshi stresses that gold is shifting from an interest-rate play to a hedge against purchasing-power erosion when term premiums rise due to excessive government borrowing. Equity Management’s Larry Lepard notes that Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish stance collides with the math of ballooning debt-service costs.

Natixis, State Street and UBS view $5,000 gold as plausible in coming months, while Doshi sees $10,000 as inevitable. With debt accumulating faster than economies can absorb it, the debasement trade keeps supporting the metal.
