Hong Kong Launches Trial of Central Gold Clearing System

Hong Kong has started the trial phase of its new central clearing and settlement system for gold transactions. This initiative forms part of a strategy to reinforce the city’s role as a global precious metals hub, with initial deals already executed and the first bullion placed in the vault. The Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau pointed to backing from the National 15th Five-Year Plan. Financial Secretary Paul Chan highlighted that the system advances gold trading infrastructure alongside steps for physical delivery, fresh products, tax relief, and stronger links to mainland markets. Secretary Christopher Hui stressed the full support package aimed at building a scalable platform covering clearing, storage, and risk tools. The platform runs under Hong Kong Precious Metals Central Clearing Company Limited and draws participation from banks, miners, refiners, and institutions.
