‘I exited my bank stocks’: Why ex-Fed insider Chris Whalen is now betting on gold

10/20/2026 · Kitco News

Christopher Whalen, who spent over four decades dissecting bank balance sheets, completely exited bank stocks at the end of September. He described a portfolio rebalance that included short positions on consumer lenders due to rising credit costs, while boosting allocations to precious metals, energy and income assets. Whalen argued that easy times for banks are ending, as loan losses had declined for eight straight quarters and shares looked overvalued. Third-quarter results already showed that record trading profits failed to lift bank stocks. He views gold and silver as an asymmetrical bet because central banks are shifting reserves away from the dollar. China added 740,000 ounces of gold in September, and limited supply should support prices. For retirees, Whalen recommends keeping 5–10 % in gold ETFs and focusing on steady income.
