U.S. Treasury Launches Gold-Colored Trump $1 Coins for 250th Anniversary

7/16/2026 · Kitco News

The U.S. Treasury has begun minting special $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump's image to mark the country's 250th anniversary. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the move on social media, highlighting symbols of liberty and patriotism. Production is underway at the Philadelphia Mint, with availability set for this fall. Though called gold coins, they feature only a gold-colored finish, are made of manganese brass, and measure slightly larger than a quarter. The step circumvents the 1866 law banning living persons on currency by citing 2020 legislation for the semiquincentennial. Bessent pointed to the Calvin Coolidge coin issued for the 150th anniversary as precedent for depicting sitting presidents.
